Female Bear

earlier known as a wolf (lupa Carolina), sometimes thought to be a dog
probably Roman, second century; possibly Hellenistic, third century BCE
cast bronze, 85 cm high, 75 wide, 95 deep (33.5 x 29.5 x 37.4 inches)
hole in chest present by 16th century
part of a fountain in 18th century, possibly also in Carolingian period
taken to Paris 1794, returned to Aachen 1815, placed in vestibule 1893
proper left front leg restored early 19th century
