Historical Archive: Pinecone

bronze, height 91 cm, diameter in center 68 cm (35.8 x 26.8 inches)
around 800 or 1000
base with inscription tenth century
probably part of a fountain in the cathedral atrium
set on a column next to the door by the late 15th c.
taken to Paris 1794, returned to Aachen 1815, placed in vestibule 1893
inscription: "Water gives to this world whatever they bring to its growth; the fertile Euphrates,
the Tigris fast as an arrow. The maker Udelrich the pious abbot sings thanks."
